Prophets are essential to God's purposes and plans. Prophets are essential to the church. Prophets are not a means for getting good prophetic words. And, prophets don't just predict what will happen in our futures. No, prophets are not psychics. True prophets are called to speak forth the very words of Almighty God. Hence, their value.
To understand the value of prophets and the prophetic voice it is essential to understand what God has placed on the inside of prophets. Amos says plainly, "the Lord God does nothing except He reveals His secret to His Servants the prophets." No other ministry, as important as those ministries might be, can say this about their calling.
In God's economy there is a special place of importance reserved for prophets. Why is this? Because God has established a preeminence on the importance of His word. God established His word and the importance of the prophetic voice to His plans from the beginning.
God called Abraham to be a prophet. Abraham was anointed by God to hear the voice of God. Abraham left everything to pursue God. God's prophetic call on Abraham is still continuing today. God's prophetic call on Abraham caused Abraham to enter into a place of exceeding great wealth.
There is a special blessing imparted to those who support prophets and prophetic ministries. The Bible does teach us that there is a prophet's reward. Now, it does not define what that reward is, but there is a special reward given to those who support prophets and prophetic ministry.
God goes so far as to say, "do My prophets no harm." Why does God say this? Because prophets, as anointed as they are, have flaws. And, those flaws often cause prophets to come under attack. All prophets, even mature prophets, have their own set of flaws. To gain what prophets have, the present tense word of what God is doing today, we must learn to look past the flaws of prophets.
Even mature prophets have their own set of flaws. Just because a prophet is mature doesn't mean they are perfect. Just because a man or woman can hear the voice of God doesn't mean that their lives are without complications, faults or failings. We all fall short of the glory, even mature prophets. So, when you hear someone say they will only listen to a prophet who is perfect, understand the fallacy of their statement.
This is why I personally love the prophet Elijah. Elijah was a senior prophet, a mature prophet, that oversaw an entire school of prophets. Elijah knew God and He knew God's voice. But, Elijah wasn't a people person. At times, Elijah was a loner. Elijah was fed by the ravens in the wilderness. Elijah saw himself as being a lone voice in Israel. He was wrong!
Elijah's vision was flawed. God had several thousand who had not bowed to Baal. Elijah's flawed vision caused him to be thrust into a state of depression. Elijah's depression became so bad that it took a divine visitation to shake him loose and set him free. Elijah the fearless became Elijah the feeble. But, Elijah didn't lose the thing that made him who he was; he didn't lose his sensitivity to the voice of God.
Recognize your calling and honor it. Build an altar where your calling intersects with the anointing on your life and your family. This prophetic altar will be a source of strength for you and your children. Prophetic altars can remain for generations, if we learn to honor those prophetic altars erected by our fathers. When we choose to honor those prophetic altars raised by our fathers, we reap the benefits of those altars.
Abraham built a prophetic altar and his grandson, Jacob, had a visitation and vision from God. Jacob built a prophetic altar to bless his sons prior to his death. Jacob's Son, Joseph, made sure that the children of Israel carried his bones from Egypt, as a sign to all the families of Israel, whether from Rachel, Leah, Bilhah or Zilpah, that they were all of Israel. These are examples of prophetic altars.
I was recently watching a man of God, Steve Gray, on television. Steve Gray was describing how his father who take him and his siblings to revivals. His father loved revivals. Is it any great wonder that God chose his son to lead one of the great revivals in our nation in of all places Smithton, Missouri? Why did God choose him? Prophetic altars.
Are you building a prophetic altar for yourself? Your family? Your children? Your unborn grandchildren? Have you allowed God to guide you to your Bethel - the place where your parents met their God? Are you ready to gain a new vision of your future? Have you looked to discover the prophetic altars in your family? If not, then start looking. Then, you will gain a new vision of the calling on your life.
As you do, you will discover a place of wonder where the angels of God are ascending and descending in your life, and where God's work is prospering. This is what happens when we discover prophetic altars. A prophetic altar is a place where the prophetic voice of God meets the need of a man or woman. Pray often for prophetic meetings. If you do, just maybe, you will leave some prophetic altars for your children and discover some prophetic altars left by your parents, grandparents or great grandparents.
